Neural mobilisation is used when there is some nerve entrapment present or when a nerve is hypersensitive. Nerves can get trapped by discs in the spine or by muscle fibers. Nerves are able to stretch and can get hypersensitive when it is required to stretch after a long period of immobility, like being in a moon boot or cast.
The physiotherapist will use a combination of movements to help mobilise the nerve and return normal flexibility to the neural tissue. You might be given an exercise to stretch the nerve at home.
Neural mobilisation can be used for the following conditions:
- Back pain with referred pain
- Neck pain with referred pain
- After immobilisation of one or more joints
